“The Price of Reunion, or Lessons in Happiness” premiered in 2014 — but has it lost its relevance?
Sadly, the opposite is true. The film’s message is even more urgent today, as we grapple with a growing mental health crisis, widespread loneliness, and social isolation — not just among immigrants, but across society.
Immigrant seniors’ skills and contributions remain underutilized, while the support systems they need have become even more limited. Since the film’s release, the Canadian government has doubled the financial responsibility period for children sponsoring their parents through the Family Reunification Program — from 10 to 20 years.
