Natalia Gaisenok

I have been a freelance journalist and creative storyteller for most of my life. Since immigrating from Belarus to Canada in 2003, I have pursued my dream of making documentaries. My films tell the stories of remarkable individuals who confront life’s challenges with courage and creativity. At the heart of my work is a desire to illuminate areas of human struggle where change is not only possible but urgently needed.

Over the past decade, I have immersed myself in the craft of filmmaking. Through formal courses, workshops, and mentorships with experienced industry professionals, I’ve developed my voice as a director, writer, and producer. I’ve completed several primarily self-financed projects, driven by a commitment to sharing stories that are too often overlooked.

My documentary The Price of Reunion, or Lessons in Happiness (2014) explored the experiences of immigrant seniors in Canada. It was recognized at several festivals, including with the Rising Star Award at the 2015 Canadian International Film Festival. The film has since been distributed to public and university libraries across Canada and broadcast on Shaw Multicultural Channel and Optik
TV.

My recent film, Giovanna, Forza!, delves into themes of immigration, generational memory, and the quiet strength of mothers and grandmothers—women whose aspirations are too often left in the margins. As with many of my works, it centers on female experiences and growth through personal transformation.

Star in the Box is the most personal and challenging film I’ve undertaken. After years of research and close collaboration with families of twice-exceptional (2e) children, I approach this documentary as a parent, as an educator, and as a filmmaker. It explores the emotional and systemic challenges faced by neurodiverse children—some as young as five—who, despite being gifted, struggle in environments not built for them.

I have deep admiration for the resilience, courage, and perseverance of the parents advocating for their 2e children. Their stories deserve space, empathy, and action. I believe this film has the power to shift perceptions and inspire change in the educational and mental health systems that so often let these families down.

When I think of Canada, I envision a vast tapestry—its natural beauty woven together with diverse and deeply human stories. Through my work, I hope to contribute my own thread to that tapestry and to offer audiences stories that inspire reflection, empathy, and change.
