Former school teacher, martial arts sensei and stand-up comic Marilina uses all her knowledge and skills to parent her 2E (twice-exceptional) son Julien. Together, they navigate a world that neither understands nor accepts neurodivergence.
Julien is gifted and also struggles with various behavioural and communication challenges. Such children are known as twice-exceptional (2e): this form of neurodivergence often grants them unique abilities, and their future contributions could hold the key to solving some of the most pressing issues that affect us all. However, they also struggle with unique challenges, and to be able to fulfil their potential, they need not just to survive but to thrive.
Through Marilina and Julien’s story, as well as others, this feature documentary explores the pathways to self-knowledge, acceptance, belonging, and growth. It also contributes to a timely and complex conversation about inclusive education, neurodivergence, and mental health.
